Abstract:

A key prerequisite for reliable cuffless blood pressure monitoring based on physiological models is the accurate assessment of changes in arterial diameter at the measurement site. The application of the bio-impedance method requires a comprehensive analysis of the region of interest, including the spatial arrangement and architecture of vessels and surrounding tissue layers. In this work, numerical modelling is proposed to estimate arterial diameter changes. The developed model fully describes the shoulder region and accounts for its anatomical features. The results of numerical modelling demonstrate that the proposed positioning of the electrode system is optimal for the selected region of interest, and that the correlation between the impedance change and the arterial diameter change reaches approximately 60%. The proposed model will be used in subsequent work to solve the inverse problem of estimating arterial diameter changes associated with a pressure waveform.
