Abstract:

The passive electrical properties of soft tissues are important for cosmetology, assessing the mechanical condition of the skin and muscle fatigue, and developing various assistive devices for people with disabilities. Their determination is accomplished by solving an ill-posed inverse problem of electrical impedance sensing.

Purpose – this study aims to develop an experimental method for determining changes in apparent resistivity based on electrical impedance signals of forearm soft tissues during isometric muscle loading.

The study demonstrated a nonlinear relationship between changes in resistivity and muscle effort. The experiments yielded apparent resistivity values consistent with physiological norms. To standardize the experimental data and find a conditionally steady-state unloaded point, it is necessary to subject the soft tissues to cyclic loading/unloading several times.

The proposed and described approach can be used for further study of the functional state of muscles and the skin-fat layer, as well as for the development of diagnostic and assistive devices.

This work was carried out within the framework of the state assignment of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for the Petrovsky National Research Centre of Surgery (project FURG-2025-0007).
