Abstract:

Statement of the problem. One condition for the successful rehabilitation of children suffered from a vertebral spinal cord injury is its continuity within all stages of the physical rehabilitation. Besides, it is important to maintain a continuity of the approach to rehabilitation within the late period when motor functions are supported and improved and relapses of chronic diseases are prevented. There is a range of issues within transfer of a patient into the late period of rehabilitation which reduce the general efficiency of rehabilitation measures. First of all, it is a low availability, remoteness and limited throughput capability of rehabilitation centers and specialized sanitariums, except for large towns. So, rehabilitation within the late period is mainly fulfilled independently at home that decreases a quality of recovery exercise performance and result of such rehabilitation correspondingly. During performance of exercises for physical treatment independently, a child and parents should adequately estimate capabilities of a child's body and strictly fulfill the technique of the exercise performance. Most people do not know peculiarities of the exercise performance technology and motions are often performed not fully because of pain by decreasing the amplitude significantly. Presence of such issues requires implementation of available methods for physical rehabilitation in order to control objectively the process of the patient’s recovery within the outpatient period by means of online assistance. Automation of the home rehabilitation process is possible by using smart recording systems and analysis of the motor activity based on a smartphone.

Aim of the work – development of the principles and implementation of the system for remote physical rehabilitation within the late period for children and adolescents suffered from spinal injuries based on a smartphone taking into account integration into the current process of the motor rehabilitation prepared into specialized clinical institutions.

Results. Plan for the integration of remote physical rehabilitation into the typical stages of rehabilitation is suggested. Main condition for implementation of such approach is a presence of the reliable method to control correctness of the performed exercises, compliance with the exercise schedule and set load level. Peculiarities of the smartphone usage as a motion sensor has been shown. The smartphone should not be an instruction how to perform an exercise but an active assistant estimating the process of physical exercises in real time. Base of any system for motion control is the recording and analysis of the limb motion trajectory. Procedure to register a correctness of the motion based on a motion trajectory according to the data obtained from an inertial smartphone sensor has been suggested.

Practical significance. At present, the system is being tested. Members – children aged from 7 to 17 suffered from impaired posture and spinal injuries. Children supported by their parents will be able to perform exercises independently “at home” and under medical supervision at the same time. Therapeutic exercise specialists will obtain information on the exercise regularity and also reply occurred questions and make face consultations. As a result, we plan to decrease a risk of expansion of uncontrolled complications after a vertebral spinal cord injury due to the effect of exercise continuity.
