Abstract:
Symbolic and connectionist approaches in cognitive modeling are often positioned as a dichotomy. Is it true and how can it be solved, if so - The core of the discussions is the representational format. A mental representation is a distinguishable object or state of a cognitive agent, carrying semantic properties and also causal roles appropriate to its - content. Among main problems of symbolism there are biological improbability and the frame problem. Connectionism avoids some of these, but its - main difficulties are the systematicity and productivity of human thought. If two controversial approaches face troubles, different variants of relations between them may exist. They may play methodologically complementary roles, there may be ontological complementarity (i.e. hybrid models of cognition) and also there may exist an alternative (or integrative) approach (DST).
