Abstract:

Improving the technical means of rehabilitation of the blind and visually impaired, expanding their functionality using modern information and computer technologies is one of the urgent problems of rehabilitation of the visual system. The development of fundamentally new methods and systems for safe spatial navigation for the blind and blind in the environment of dynamic objects today requires an assessment of the correctness of the models, methods and algorithms used in the developed system.

The purpose of the work – to conduct an experimental approbation of the layout of the spatial navigation system for the blind and visually impaired and to evaluate the correctness of the developed algorithms and the system during its indoor and outdoor operation.

The results of technical testing of an experimental system layout based on a Raspberry Pi 5 single-board computer, a Sony IMX708 wide-angle video camera, a TOFSense-F2 PH laser rangefinder and an MPU-6050 gyroscope are presented. The testing was carried out in two contrasting operating conditions – outdoors and indoors. The experimental model provided a video processing frequency of 6.2–7.6 fps, simultaneous tracking of up to 12 objects on the street and up to 6 indoors, and an error in measuring the range of objects of no more than 0.05 m. A protocol for testing the system under conditions of vision loss modeling is described, on the basis of which recommendations for the use of the system are formulated, as well as technical and climatic limitations of its operation are determined.

The obtained technical characteristics and formulated recommendations for the use of the system can be applied in the preparation of an experimental layout for subsequent clinical testing with the participation of blind and visually impaired users.
