Methodological errors of vector direction finders

Abstract:

The direction finding functions for determining radio direction finding and elevation angle when receiving an electromagnetic wave of arbitrary polarization by three electric dipoles and three magnetic dipoles or three vibrator antennas and three loop antennas, which axes of circular symmetry are oriented along the Cartesian system of coordinates, and the phase centers are located at one point, have been justified. The method of calculating methodological errors of vector radio direction finders based on revealing differences between the directional patterns of vibrator and loop antennas and the directional patterns of electric and magnetic dipoles, respectively, has been given. Results of calculation of methodical errors of direction finding of vector radio direction finders, which use symmetric vibrating antennas or ring loop antennas for determination of arrival direction of electromagnetic waves of corresponding polarizations, have been covered. It has been shown that methodical errors of vector radio-direction finders are caused by deviation of amplitude directional patterns of vibrator and loop antennas from the form of “sinusoidal” amplitude directional patterns. The limits of electrodynamic sizes of vibrator and loop antennas, providing achievement of the given accuracy of radio direction finding by vector radio direction finders, have been defined.
