Abstract:

This paper discusses polarization properties of electronically scanned array (ESA) antennas aimed for linear polarization waves radiation which utilize microstrip patch elements. The reasons of cross-polarization radiation emission and its effect on accuracy characteristics of monopulse ESAs are also discussed. Approaches to suppression of interfering cross-polarization radiation are considered including symmetrical out-of-phase patches' excitation, introduction of artificial defect in ground structure, polarizer arrangement in front of ESA. The polarizer gives additional 28 dB suppression of cross-polarization at 45° scan angle and 11 dB suppression at 60°.
