Methods and characteristics of position finding of ground-based radio source by radio direction finding from the side of the aircraft

Abstract:
The methods of determination of a ground-based radio source (RS) position with the onboard aircraft direction finding antenna array, based on the formnig of the position line of a ground-based RS as an intersection line of a couple of independent position half-planes, corresponding to the different variants of measurement of the angular parameters during radio direction finding, and determining of coordinates of a ground-based radio source as the intersection point of the position line with ground surface have been considered. The iterative procedure of search of the intersection point of position line of the ground-based RS with ground surface, which parameters depend on the irregularity of landforms in the radio direction finding area has been considered. The statistical characteristics of accuracy of location of a ground-based RS have been given when air determinating of pairs of independent azimuth angles or azimuth and elevation angles of a ground-based RS. The analytical dependences of the dispersions of linear errors of individual and average estimates of ground-based RS coordinates along the axes of abscissas and ordinates of normal Earth-based coordinate system and the relevant circular (radial) errors of estimates of ground-based RS coordinates on space positional relationship of the aircraft and a ground-based RS, on angular orientation of onboard direction finding antenna array and on the angles of intersection of the position line and normals to the position half-planes of a ground-based RS with the surface of the Earth.
