Abstract:
Multilayer structures consisting of several dielectric layers on the metal screen can be used as substrates of microstrip antennas, as guiding structures for electromagnetic waves. In the case of microstrip antennas the problem is excitation of surface waves, in the case of guiding structures the problem is excitation of higher order modes. The method of analysis applied in this article permits to determine the modes propagating in a multilayer structure which may consist as of several layers of dielectric on the conducting screen, as of layers of metamaterials. At the beginning of the article the known analysis of surface waves propagating in a single layer dielectric structure on the conducting screen is given, from which it results that a dielectric layer on the conducting screen always supports at least one surface wave. Then, with the similar method the surface wave propagation conditions in a two-layer structure on the conducting screen for three cases were investigated: both layers are dielectrics; the lower layer is metamaterial and the upper layer is dielectric; the lower layer is dielectric and the upper layer is metamaterial. As metamaterials the substances with simultaneously negative permittivity and permeability were considered. As a result of the analysis the conditions which can permit to achieve either surface wave cut-off in the case of the multilayer dielectric structure located on the conducting screen with and without metamaterials for a microstrip antenna, or to ensure the propagation only of the first order mode in the case of guiding structures were obtained.
