Adaptive maximum likelihood detection and direction finding of radio waves by means of the multichannel amplitude radio direction finder with antenna system of arbitrary configuration

Abstract:
Synthesized algorithm assumes calculation of diagonal sampling matrix of channel energy in antenna elements' outputs in each measurement. This includes estimation of amplitude of electromagnetic field in current measurement followed by summation of the matrixes in a series of observations with individual weighting. The decision function is formed as direction finding relief which depends on integrated matrix of channel powers and radio direction finder's antenna pattern. Maximum likelihood estimation of arrival direction of a radio wave is found by global maximization of the decision function. The solution on presence or absence of a plane wave is made after comparison of decision function's global extremum and threshold value which provides constant rate of errors of the first kind. In case of presence of a plane wave, the resulting estimation of amplitude electromagnetic field is calculated by averaging of the estimations gained in each of the observations. The decision rule of the algorithm is correct for any structure and configuration of the antenna system of the radio direction finder if energetic antenna pattern is used which characterizes the antenna system.
