The prospect of ultrashort pulse-shaped signals application for airborne radar systems

Abstract:
Potential applicability of airborne radar systems using ultrashort pulses is analyzed in the article. The problem of airborne detection of buried mines and objects that concealed in the forestland can be considered as such applicability. Ultrashort pulses can be used in solving the problems of air, water and ground area monitoring with combined multifunctional airborne radar systems. The following way of airborne radar system building is considered meaningful: ultrashort pulse-shaped signals are used in short range near field while interpulse pilot signal are used in more distant field. Ultrashort pulse-shaped signals can be used in airborne radar systems installed on small unmanned air vehicles for short-range ground target reconnaissance. They can also be used in helicopter radar systems providing radiolocation observation of earth surface and ground objects, low flying operation and landing. The usage of power ultrashort pulse radiating along-track direction of attacking guided weapons can lead to development of electromagnetic weapon for air vehicle reliable protection. Real worth, advantages and disadvantages of airborne radar systems with ultrashort pulse-shaped signals can be estimated only after laboratory tests and flight testing experiments.
