Modeling and design of the compact metamaterial based antenna using Ansoft HFSS environment

Abstract:
Low-size metamaterial antenna is stydied, which consists of a microstrip radiator and a metamaterial slab. The slab is placed over the radiator. Cross sizes of the microstrip radiator and the metamaterial slab are equal. The slab consists of several parallel layers of planar metallic spiral arrays placed in a dielectric matrix. Antennas with two-layer and three-layer slab are considered. Characteristics of both two types of the antenna are obtained with Ansoft HFSS environment and discussed, including antenna patterns and frequency dependencies of standing wave ratio. It was found that antennas' gain is increasing with increasing the number of layers. Results of comparison with an analogue are provided.
