Endotheliocytes, platelets, leukocytes take an active part in cellular interactions, as a result of which cellular aggregates are formed between cells of hematopoietic and non-hematopoietic origin, which are involved in pathophysiological processes. The first stages of intercellular interactions are carried out with the participation of adhesion molecules – selectins belonging to the class of glycoproteins. Currently, there is an increasing interest to this class of molecules, since a violation of their functioning leads to a violation of the adhesive function and the development of pathology. Aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the level of intercellular adhesion molecules – selectins sP, sE and sL, and their glycoprotein ligand PSGL-1 in the blood serum of patients with acute arterial thrombosis, which has developed against the the background of atherosclerosis of the arteries of the lower extremities, in comparison with healthy donors. The control group consisted of clinically healthy donors comparable to the subjects by gender and age. Blood serum was the material for the study. We determined the level of selectins and their ligand by the sandwich method of ELISA on Stat Fax 2100 (microplate reader) (Awareness technology Inc. Palm City, FL 34990, USA). The results were expressed in pg/ml for selectins and ng/ml for PSGL-1, respectively. The pilot study revealed decreased significantly in serum concentrations of sP-selectin in 2 times (p=0,049) and sE-selectin in 1.3 times (p=0,043); a tendency to decrease in leukocyte sL-selectin, increased significantly the concentration of the glycoprotein ligand of selectins PSGL-1 in patients with acute arterial thrombosis, which has developed against the background of atherosclerosis of peripheral arteries, compared with healthy donors in 2.2 times (p=0,029). Changes in the level of cell adhesion's molecules may indicate a violation of the adhesive function of the endothelium. Acute arterial thrombosis, which developed against the background of atherosclerosis of the arteries of the lower extremities, is associated with a decrease the level of cell adhesion molecules – sP-, sE-, sL-selectins in the blood serum, and increase the level of the glycoprotein ligand of selectins PSGL-1, compared with healthy individuals. It requires further studies of their participation in the pathogenesis of this pathology.
