Abstract:

Formulation of the problem. individual psychological personality traits and their relationship with the length of time spent online in students have not been studied.

Aim – to investigate individual psychological characteristics of a person and assess their relationship with the length of time spent online with students.

94 students aged 17 to 23 years were examined. All students were divided into two groups according to the principle of the length of time spent online. The first group – 46 students, the duration of their online stay was from 10 to 13 hours a day (on average 12.1 ± 0.7 hours). The second group – 48 students, the duration of online stay was from 3 to 9 hours (on average 6.3 ± 0.9 hours). To study individual psychological personality traits, we used the questionnaires «Personal Issues Inventory», «Self-Monitoring Scale», «The study of Volitional Self-Regulation» and «The Emotional Intelligence Self-Evaluation». It was found that students who have volitional self-regulation of personality, self-control, social self-control, the level of emotional flexibility, control of their emotions and empathy are at a high level belong to the 2nd group and spend less time on the Internet than students of the 1st group. in whom these qualities are less developed. It was revealed that such persistent negative states as loneliness and a sense of meaninglessness of existence are moderately expressed and prevail among students of the 1st group than in the 2nd. At the same time, hostile conflict prevails in the 2nd group. Free will and the discrepancy between the real and ideal "I" are moderately expressed in students in both groups. Correlation analysis showed a direct relationship between volitional self-regulation, perseverance, self-motivation, a sense of uselessness, homelessness, a sense of loneliness and the amount of time spent online. An inverse relationship is observed between social self-control, emotional awareness, managing one's emotions, feeling the meaninglessness of existence, freedom of choice, and online time. Thus, students who have the most pronounced psychological characteristics such as empathy, volitional self-regulation, persistence, social self-control, emotional intelligence and self-motivation tend to spend less time on the Internet than students who have these qualities less developed. Students who are dominated by persistent negative psychoemotional states tend to spend more time on the Internet than those with less pronounced ones.

Individual psychological personality traits revealed in students and their relationship with the length of time spent online can be used in the development of a program to assess the health of student youth. Each group of students has its own specific personality traits and persistent negative states that affect behavior and are interrelated with the time spent online.
