Abstract:
This review deals with the analysis of up-to-date concepts of the various common and some rare forms of human neuroendocrine tumors. It summarizes the information about the specifics of the recent histological classifications of tumors of the digestive and bronchopulmonary systems, and also presents data on the histogenesis and criteria of morphological diagnosis of neuroendocrine tumors. The most important entities of this type of tumors are analyzed. Taking into account the localization and various biological characteristics controversial issues of the nomenclature, as well as various systems of grading and staging of this group of neoplasms are discussed. In the light of these criteria current data on the clinico-pathological, ultrastructural, immunohistochemical and molecular features of neuroendocrine neoplasms are presented.
