The issue of determining the toxicity of nanoparticles has been very important in recent years. However, many studies as result have given values of median lethal doses (LD50) and half maximal effective concentrations (EC50), which are not sufficiently informative without hazard classification information. The objective of this work is to develop a classification of acute toxicity for three selected substances: silver, titanium dioxide and carbon nanoparticles, examining a large sample of articles, and to evaluate the resulting values in terms of the relevance of their use.
Following standards have been used: GOST 32424-2013 and GOST 12.1.007-76. These documents determine the environmental toxicity of different substances. A total of 10 values have been found in articles for nanoparticles of silver (Ag), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and carbon (SWCNT, MWCNT, Fullerene, Graphene Oxide). The data were found for 2017-2022, which allows all the results of the work to be considered relevant.
It was found that the hazard class for each substance could differ significantly in the individual articles. Even within the same material and standard, the hazard class is not nearly the same in all cases. As result, the definition of the hazard class by the standards described above does not allow a general conclusion on the acute toxicity of silver, titanium dioxide and carbon nanoparticles alone and together. Therefore, the assessment of acute toxicity of nanomaterials in scientific work should consist of specific cases for each element, studying all its characteristics, such as shape, crystalline structure, size, etc.
