Abstract:
«Nanotechnology» Youth innovation creativity center (NanoCenter) was organized in 2014 by the Faculty of Physics, Lomonosov Moscow State University and Advanced Technologies Center with Moscow Government support. Students at NanoCenter make measurements using FemtoScan scanning probe microscope, try to understand in details how it works. NanoCenter is equipped with six FemtoScan multifunctional scanning probe microscopes, which allow pupils to see the atomic lattice of monocrystals and polycrystalline materials. The atomic force microscope allows us to consider in detail the topography of the film at the nanometer level. While stretching an elastic polymer film with metal deposition on its surface, one can obtain a quite regular relief. The appearance of a diffraction grating by the overflows of the reflected color can be observed with naked eye. Polymer recycling is now a certain problem. Recently, Japanese scientists discovered that the widely used polymer polyethylene terephthalate, also known as mylar, decomposes into simple substances  terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol under the influence of bacteria Ideonella sakaiensis 201-F6. Identified genes involved in the decomposition of plastic can be incorporated into the rapidly multiplying bacteria Escherichia coli, thus creating an environmentally friendly waste-processing plant. Detailed image of E.coli can be also easily obtained using an atomic force microscope. For this purpose a colony of bacteria, grown on nutrient agar in a Petri dish, is moved to water, and after stirring up a drop of bacterial suspension, about 4 μl in volume, is deposited to 1 cm2 of freshly cleaved mica. NanoCenter invites everybody to attend training courses and master classes: 3D microscopy, 3D printers, 3D machining, 3D design and 3D modeling, 3D laser processing. Everyone can learn how to perate the FemtoScan Scanning Probe Microscope, how to get high-quality images, and also how to design a scanning probe microscope on your own.
