Abstract:

Problem statement. Currently, there is a need to quickly identify and localize karst voids, water-saturated areas, and tectonic faults along the sides of ore deposit quarries to ensure the safety of geomechanical operations. Conventional geophysical methods are often labor-intensive and require a long time to interpret the results, while the development of ore deposit quarries is moving much faster. To solve this problem, it is proposed to use ground penetrating radar.

Goal. To demonstrate the experience of performing operational geophysical operations using ground penetrating radar to solve the problem of express identifying and localizing anomalies along the sides of ore deposit quarries to ensure the safety of geomechanical operations.

Results. The specialists of INTERRASCAN LLC together with the specialists of IZMIRAN have completed a number of pilot projects on the application of the deep high-resolution pulsed electrical exploration (DHPE) technology using the ground penetrating radar method for the geotechnical survey of engineering structures of GRK Bystrinskoye LLC (Nornikel), Zabaikalsky Krai. This is a large facility for the development of gold, copper and iron deposits using the open pit method. To demonstrate the capabilities of DHPE in solving the assigned task, several benches of two quarries, an oxidized ore dump and the perimeter of the administrative and household complex building were surveyed. All performed pilots showed positive results, the obtained data when compared coincided with the available data of archival surveys or additionally conducted surveys. The main values of these works for the Customer: work speed – field and office works on four sites took no more than a week in total; non-destructive nature of the technology – no additional permits for geological massif develop-ment are required; visualization of the actual position of discontinuities in the massif.

Practical significance. The main values of these works for the Customer: efficiency of the works – in-situ and office work at four sites took no more than a week in total; non-destructive technology – no additional permits are required for the development of the geological massif; visualization of the actual position of faults in the massif.
