Modern space systems for sensing the Earth and near-Earth outer space form a large amount of information, the processing of which in real time on board spacecraft (spacecraft) is difficult and must be carried out using ground-based computing facilities. Optical channels allow you to provide more bandwidth while reducing the size of antenna systems, reducing interference between channels, and the data transfer rate reaches 10 Gbit/s and higher. Laser communication systems are an important component of promising means of remote sensing of the Earth and communications.
Wireless laser communication is based on the transmission of data by modulated radiation in the infrared part of the spectrum. Currently, there are a number of factors limiting the use of lasers for communication between spacecraft and ground stations.
The article provides an assessment of one of the main parameters of laser systems – the radiation divergence angle.
