The article discusses the factors affecting the durability of the thermionic cathode used in gas discharge devices, where the arc discharge is used for pumping them out. The physical factors associated with the occurrence of voltage discharge conditions, reducing the degree of emission of the cathode, the influence of temperature and structure of the cathode to its emission sodobnost. Presents a model of processes occurring during the thermal cathodes were and the change of microstructure of its surface. Describe methods to increase the durability of the thermionic cathode. Considered perspective directions of use of gas discharge lasers with a thermionic cathode.
