Abstract:
In Russian language, in technical and professional literature the term of multi-function radar is utilized pretty often, but there is no monosemantic definition of this term. In addition to this there is a series of contradictory approaches related to the well-established technical concepts, accustomed Anglicisms or effects resulting from the literal translation of English definitions. Often it is formal (the literal, or in other words - external) approach which prevails in relation to the term «multi-function» radar. Ac-cording to the approach above, the term «multi-function» radar is discussed as one that is possible to perform several functions. With this approach, most modern radars should be considered as multi-functional, because they provide support for multiple (at least two or three) functions. There is another approach, in which the radar acquires multifunctional property in case it has any function which was not inherent in earlier radar of this type. In addition, often there is some intermixture of concepts such as multi-functional radar and radar system. However, the versatility of diversity of external functions can be considered a prerequisite for inclusion into multifunction station class. The following definition could be chosen as the mist faithful: multi-function radar is a radar, providing the solution of several tasks, each of the tasks requires a substantial change in radar-s structure, characteristics, signal and algorithms of received signal processing. The definition above is not monosemantic but is showing the need to move from the literal approach to the approach based on structural and functional features of the construction of the station. Namely, in the process of changing the functions (tasks) of the radar, automated control can be applied to the station structure, whole system operation modes, etc.
