Abstract:

In this study we investigated the level of c-fos expression in different brain areas in male and female rats housed in the absence of light with standard immunohistochemical staining protocol. We developed special integrative index for estimation of metabolic activity in brain structures. It was found that early long-term visual deprivation was associated with reduced c-fos expression in different areas of neocortex in male and in different areas of neocortex and some areas of diencephalon and mesencephalon in female rats. The reduced expression of c-fos in different brain areas in rats subjected to long-term visual deprivation from birth to maturity indicates a decline in the activity of these brain regions. Along with data about the decrease in the total thickness of the cortex and the increase of glio-neuronal index, these findings suggest the changing role of these regions in the formation of individual experience.
