The effect of low intensity electromagnetic radiation on the activity of succinate dehydrogenase in rabbits - cardiac and sceletal muscles

Abstract:
A key anaerobic metabolic enzyme - succinate dehydrogenase (SDH), having an important function in supplying tissues with energy, is a very sensitive characteristic of the cellular respiration in case of changing the physiological state of the body under the impact of various environmental factors (radiation, vibration, noise). The activity of SDH is associated with corticosteroids, which activate the transport of aminoacids, alter the structure of cell membranes and normalize metabolic processes. The purpose of presented paper is the experimental study of the effects of sixfold treatment by electromagnetic radiation in millimeter range on the activity of anaerobic metabolism of rabbits - heart and skeletal muscles. Experiments were conducted on 12 adult male rabbits Chinchilla bastard. Irradiation of the animals at frequency of 42.2 GHz (non-thermal millimeter waves) was carried out in the continuous generation mode at 30 cm distance from the surface of the body for 30 minutes. The high frequency generator G4-141 was used. SDH activity was determined by the colorimetric method. The criterion of enzyme activity is the bleaching period of methylene blue (in seconds) in homogenate under anaerobic in vitro condition, which is inversely proportional to the enzyme activity. The microthermostat МТ-03 was used. The experiments were performed in the laboratory at +21-22˚C. Obtained data have shown that as a result of sixfold impact of electromagnetic radiation the level of succinate dehydrogenase activity was greatly increased in rabbits' heart muscle by 50.0% (p <0.001) and skeletal muscles by 24.4% (p <0.01), as compared to control (Fig 1). Findings testify the activity of compensatory possibilities of anaerobic metabolism, targeted to maintain the energy homeostasis under the influence of electromagnetic radiation in millimeter range in above mentioned muscles.
