Information-Measuring System and Method for Assessment of Grasp Strength Characteristics

Abstract:
Self-service capabilities and work depends on the functional state of the upper extremities. Therefore, the rehabilitation of patients with this type of pathology is an important medical and social problem. One of the actual directions of its solution is increasing the reliability hand function assessment by using the capabilities of computer technology.
The analysis of the problem has shown that a single study of the issue of grasp classification was not performed. In this connection, generalized grasp taxonomy is developed, the need to analyze the power or precision characteristics of which depends on the purpose of assessment of upper extremity function.
The biotechnical system for instrumental evaluation of force parameters of upper extremities was created. The ap-probation of the system was carried out by examining a group of women with the edema of upper limb due to radical treatment of breast cancer. In the process of life and work cylindrical and pinch grasps are main, so we studied these kinds of grasp.
The following parameters of grasp were calculated: maximum power Fmax, average power , time of keeping power , the impulse of force , the angle of slope of the trend line , the velocity of increasing of force , the velocity of decreasing of force .
Impulse of force is the most informative of the above parameters for assessing strength function of grasp for this series of studies. The use of other parameters is reasonable to disclose the features of functional disorders.
The proposed method and the system can now be used to improve the reliability of strength function of the upper extremity evaluation in order to clarify the diagnosis and determine the effectiveness of medical rehabilitation of different groups of patients.
