Abstract:

Currently, measuring the radio-frequency characteristics of complex antenna systems (which include scattering objects such as reflecting, focusing, and protective structures) requires the establishment of expensive measurement facilities. Consequently, there is a need to replace full-scale measurements of the entire antenna system with a more cost-effective semirealistic simulation approach. This approach involves the electromagnetic simulation of the system based on the measured data of its individual components.

In this work, a numerical method for the measurement-based simulation of antenna radiation in the presence of scattering objects has been proposed based on the method of moments (MoM). Utilizing the concept of spatial decomposition, the proposed method recursively determines the currents on the scattering object and the antenna induced by multiple interactions (reflections). Using the example of a horn antenna radiating in the proximity of a metallic tube located near its aperture, it has been demonstrated that the proposed successive over-reflection method offers significant advantages in accuracy and radiation pattern validity over conventional international approaches based on EM simulation suites that import near-field measurement data. It has been shown that when accounting for the interactions between the scattering object and the antenna, a simplified equivalent geometric model of the antenna can be employed. The validity of the measurement-based simulation results obtained via the successive over-reflection method has been experimentally confirmed through a comparative analysis with the results of direct measurements of the radiation pattern.
