Abstract:

Formulation of the problem. The development of the Arctic territories of the Russian Federation and the advancement of the Northern Sea Route (NSR) are gaining particular relevance under current geopolitical and economic conditions. At the same time, the NSR is a challenging maritime route featuring ice fields of varying thickness. Accurate ice thickness measurement is critical for safe navigation, but existing methods for assessing ice conditions have significant accuracy limitations. This makes the task of developing a remote ice thickness measurement technique highly relevant.

Purpose. Development of a methodology to improve the accuracy of remote ice layer thickness determination using multi‑frequency radar sounding.

Results. As a result of the conducted research: a methodology for remote ice thickness measurement from an aircraft using a multifrequency radar signal has been proposed, a mathematical model has been developed those accounts for sounding the Earth’s surface with a multifrequency signal and ensures the method’s invariance to the a priori uncertainty of the ice layer structure and characteristics, simulation modelling has been performed.

Practical significance. The developed methodology allows obtaining accurate and timely information about ice conditions and can be used by developers of modern and prospective remote sensing tools for ensuring safe navigation in challenging ice conditions.
