Modern methods of spine examination allow obtaining detailed information about its anatomical structure, however, they do not provide a quantitative assessment of the mutual displacement of the vertebrae during walking and changes in their kinematic characteristics at different levels of external mechanical stress. The existing motion analysis systems are mainly focused on the study of the lower extremities and require the use of expensive specialized equipment. The purpose of the work is the development of a method and a hardware and software system for quantifying vertebral displacement in different phases of the walking cycle at different levels of external stress based on video sequence analysis, automatic tracking of reflective markers and determination of walking phases. Results. A hardware and software system has been developed that includes modules for recording video images, automatically detecting and tracking reflective markers, forming a local coordinate system, determining the phases of the walking cycle using LED markers placed on shoes, as well as evaluating the displacement characteristics of vertebral segments. Experimental testing was carried out on a healthy volunteer when walking without load and with a symmetrical external load of 1, 4 and 6 kg. The obtained results confirmed the correctness of the developed method and algorithms for automatic assessment of vertebral displacement. It has been established that an increase in the external load is accompanied by an increase in the lateral displacement of the vertebral segments and their range of motion. Practical significance. The proposed method and the developed system can be used for objective functional assessment of the spine, quantitative analysis of the effect of external mechanical stress on walking biomechanics, monitoring the effectiveness of rehabilitation measures, as well as in clinical and biomechanical studies of spinal diseases.
