When operating radar stations, an urgent task is to confirm and monitor their radar characteristics, which in turn depend on the radar potential. Therefore, it is important to substantiate the concept of radar potential and its correct use in design as a generalizing indicator of the possibility of obtaining radar information, including the technical characteristics of the receiving and transmitting path, signal processing systems and signal-to-noise ratio losses that occur during the implementation of signal processing. The paper summarizes and clarifies the concept of realizable radar potential based on the provisions of the theory of signal detection, and provides an explanation of the physical essence of the radar potential. Expressions for the analytical calculation and measurement of the radar potential are obtained, explanations of the features of the radar potential assessment are given. It is emphasized that the radar potential is a multidimensional function depending on spatial coordinates. It is important to use a normalized representation of the signal-to-noise ratio for the universality of the value of the radar potential, comparing it with the potential of other radars. It is emphasized that careful and correct consideration of the parameters used to calculate the radar potential leads to an accurate assessment of the value of the radar potential. The expression for calculating the radar potential
allows analyzing the influence of spatial and temporal parameters of multiple signals and their processing on the realized radar potential. When experimentally measuring the radar potential, as a rule, they strive to obtain a point estimate of the potential based on the size of a large sample.
The proposed methodological approach to calculating the radar potential can be used to calculate and measure the radar potential, which is designed to confirm radar characteristics during radar development and control radar parameters during operation. Expressions are given for calculating the range, effective reflecting surface, and the possibility of estimating the potential accuracy of the radar depending on the range to the target.
