Abstract:

Infertility is one of the most critical medical and social problems. Broadly, the male factor infertility contributes to approximately 50% of all cases of infertility. Oxidative stress may be implicated in 30–80% of infertile men through causing sperm DNA damage and poor sperm quality. In this light, we designed this study to determine and compare the levels of seminal

MDA and TAC in fertile and infertile Yemeni men and then to investigate their relationship with sperm parameters. A total of

100 men were recruited and classified into two groups, the case group consisted of 50 infertile men, and the control group consisted of 50 fertile men. Microscopic semen analysis to determine sperm parameters and biochemical assay for measuring MDA and TAC level in seminal plasma were performed. We found MDA concentration was significantly higher in infertile men (1.6 nmol/ml) compared with the fertile men (0.93 nmol/ml, p < 0.01), while slightly lower TAC activity in infertile than in the fertile men. We also found a statistically significant negative correlation with percent total motility (r = −0.361, p< 0.01), percent progressive motility (rs = −0.369, p <0.01), percent normal morphology (r = −0.350, p < 0.01) and percent vitality (r = −0.370, p < 0.01). We concluded, oxidative stress is associated with male infertility among Yemeni people and seminal MDA level could be used as a predictor for male infertility.
