Regeneration potential of a new tendon implant made of polyhydroxybutyrate nanofibres

Abstract:
The development of implants that provide the regeneration of ligaments and tendons, there is an actual problem of modern traumatology and orthopedics. The paper presents an original artificial implant of ligaments developed using of solid polymeric fibers and non-woven matrix consisting of nano- and micro-fibers, made of polyhydroxybutyrate (PHB). It is shown that the nano- and microfiber PHB matrix of the implant exhibits a high biocompatibility, provides the attachment and growth of human cells thereon. It is found in an experimental model of Wistar rats that the implant exhibits the property of high effective conductor for regeneration of ligaments, particularly the damaged Achilles tendon. It is found also that the use of the nano- and microfibers in the implant is crucial for the formation of morphologically adequate tissue regenerate of the tendon in the tissue defect. The conclusion is made about high potential of the developed implant for reconstructive surgery
