Abstract:

The article addresses the problem of using surface approximations in the differential-method calculation of flow in the stern region and in the wake. The equations governing the averaged turbulent flow in the stern region and wake were simplified under the assumption that they could be partially parabolized. As a result, the following parameters were calculated: longitudinal velocity, normal velocity, transverse velocity, dissipation rate, turbulent kinetic energy, boundary-layer thickness, and friction coefficient.

It should be noted that, when solving the problem of calculating flow in the area of a ship’s stern, the presented system of equations is used to compute turbulent flow within a region bounded by the centerplane, the waterline plane, a cylindrical surface of radius r drawn so that the entire viscous flow remains inside the volume under consideration, and planes perpendicular to the centerplane located at the initial section (at midship or near the end of the cylindrical insert on the hull) and at the location up to which the characteristics of the turbulent flow must be determined (up to the aft perpendicular or up to a specified section in the wake behind the hull).
