Abstract:
Hydrogen evolution reaction on iron in background solutions of x M HCl + (1-x) M LiCl proceeds with slow discharge H+solv + e → Hads + solvent Insertion of guanidine in 0.5-10 mM concentration does not alter the limiting step nature. It is suggested that Hads coverage does not exceed 0.1. Addition of 0.5 mM phenylbiguanidine induces replacement of the slow discharge by limiting recombination Hads + Hads → H2 that, in turn, is replaced by slow surface diffusion with growth of concentration up to 10 mM Hads → diffusion along surface Influence of o-fluorophenylbiguanidine is similar in whole. Observed regularities are explained in terms of difference in structure of the additives molecules.
