Problem Statement. New unmanned aerial vehicle (UAVs) technology has become more accessible and practical for power line inspection. In this paper, we propose a multi-platform UAV system and a multi-model communication system for highly efficient power line inspection tasks. Different UAVs jointly perform long-range and short-range shooting functions, as well as communication relay. High-quality images/videos are transmitted in real time to a local control station for UAV navigation and to a remote office for analysis. Experience shows that joint inspection using several UAVs can be much more efficient than traditional inspection methods.
Objective. To propose a new method for inspection and testing of power transmission lines using several types of UAVs with the help of certain signal transmission and retransmission methods.
Results. A new concept for power line inspection using UAV cooperative actions is proposed. The functional capabilities of the UAV and the communication system are presented and discussed. Practical experience shows that, thanks to cooperative actions, the time spent on inspection can be significantly reduced and the efficiency can be significantly increased. The feasibility and superiority of UAV-based inspections are demonstrated. Further work may include optimizing the UAV configuration as part of the crew.
Practical significance. The presented method allows to increase the efficiency of inspection and testing of power transmission lines in comparison with existing methods.
