Abstract:

Time-domain measurements have proven effective for diagnosing and monitoring microwave devices such as antennas, cable assemblies, and waveguide paths. Unlike traditional frequency-domain methods, the time-domain method allows for transient analysis, defect localization, and visualization of signal propagation along a transmission line by converting frequency-domain data to time using the inverse Fourier transform. The aim of this study was to explore the practical application of time-domain measurements in aligning antennas and microwave devices.

The study explored the feasibility of using time-domain measurements for a range of applications, including troubleshooting various cable assemblies, phasing cable assemblies, diagnosing antenna array channels, and troubleshooting waveguide paths. Practical analyses were used to obtain reflection coefficient versus time curves, enabling the diagnosis of problems in microwave devices. The time-domain measurement method provided a comprehensive approach to microwave device testing, combining diagnostics, phasing, and defect localization. This method allowed for the transition from abstract parameters to their physical interpretation, enabling direct visualization of signal propagation along a transmission line. This opens up practical applications for time-domain measurement in applications such as cable assembly connector seal quality testing, cable assembly mechanical damage testing, and waveguide flange joint defect testing. This method also enables highly accurate cable electrical length determination, which is useful for cable trimming for phased cable assemblies.
