Abstract:

Formulation of the problem. Spatial modulation (SM) is a single-stream multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) technique in which only one transmit antenna is activated at a time. In a real wireless high speed transmission system, data is transmitted in packets. At the receiver, incorrectly decoded packets need to be retransmitted. The effective data rate, that is, throughput, is used to compare the channel estimation performance for different pilot ratios. In addition to completely eliminating inter-channel interference, spatial modulation also shows great energy savings in the RF circuit. However, unlike multi-stream MIMO systems, channel estimation for spatial modulation becomes a problem because a MIMO channel cannot be estimated in a single transmission step on a single stream.

Purpose. Investigate the influence of the pilot ratio on the spatial modulation channel estimate. Propose a new, more efficient SM system estimation algorithm that uses channel correlation and jointly estimates streams for different transmit antennas.

Results. The proposed method is capable of providing the same evaluation period as more complex multi-stream MIMO schemes. The article investigates the change in the number of transmitted pilot signals during spatial modulation for both traditional and new methods for estimating the communication channel. By balancing accuracy and data volume, an optimal pilot signal ratio can be achieved for maximum channel capacity. Simulation results show that the new scoring approach outperforms the traditional method with a much lower optimal pilot count ratio.

Practical significance. The proposed correlation-based channel estimation technique increases the throughput of multi-user MIMO systems with a lower optimal pilot gain. The simulation results confirm that the proposed algorithm is energy efficient and can be applied to multi-user MIMO systems with a high user movement speed.
