Abstract:
Due to its high efficiency switched mode radio transmitters (radio transmitters with switched mode RF power amplifiers) are widely used in communication systems, terrestrial radio navigation and broadcasting. Since the RF power amplifiers of various transmitters are based on the same type of circuitry, their cost and design laboriousness even considering diversity of technical characteristics and parameters could be significantly reduced by using technologically standardized and perfect solutions. At the same time flexible variation of performance parameters proceeding from the certain application conditions can be realized on the basis of software controlled signal generation procedure. The paper aims at generalizing the structure of program-controlled power amplifiers as a basis enabling to create high power switched mode radio transmitters with improved performance and lower cost. While developing power amplifier based on a modular architecture, flexible and effective change of its properties can be achieved on the basis of decentralized control principle. It supposes insertion into each structural element of the power amplifier a relevant control element. Thus each unit of power amplifier consists of the power switches subunit and control subunit. Realization of distributed control unit on reprogrammable hardware components allows varying the properties of RF power amplifiers without changing the power switches subunit. This can be done in accordance with a certain application conditions. The structure of the transmitter modules including power stages and distributed set of reprogrammable control units is provided.
