Normalization of radar images in RCS units

Abstract:
This paper is devoted to high-resolution radar (ISAR) image measurements metrology. The first part shows the present target representation of such a group of isolated scatters. In most cases only several scattering centers defines the properties of integral target scattering. Based on generally accepted integral RCS definition and target scatter elements properties the local scattering center definition is proposed. Radar image analysis shows unconformity between values of RCS of scattering center and the RCS of radar. To avoid confusion during radar image presentation such term as RCS of radar image domain was defined. The second part discusses the influence of mathematical transformations during the image construction on an absolute image brightness scale. Input and output data can be related using Parseval-s identity. Moreover, this way provides capability of image calibration in absolute RCS values. Equations needed to apply measured data transformations during image construction are shown. The third part proposes techniques for radar image uncertainty estimation of scattering centers and image domains RCS values. These techniques are based on usage of exactly known standard scatters. Experimental results are shown.
