Fiber-Optic interferometer Based on Mode Interference at a Splice of Standard and Small-Core Fibers

Abstract:
A fiber interferometer based on interaction between core and cladding modes that are coupled at splices of fibers having unmatched core mode profiles is demonstrated. The interfero¬meter is formed by splicing a section of small-core fiber that is single-mode at 630 nm between two standard fibers. The transmission spectra of the fiber interferometer are measured for diffe¬rent lengths of the inserted fiber section. The spectra reveal interference fringes having envelopes with two broad dips, whose positions and widths are independent of the interferometer length
