Abstract:

Problem setting. The development of artificial intelligence (AI) opens up great opportunities for improving the efficiency of processes in medicine. One of the possible applications of AI in medicine is the organization of intelligent operating rooms. The development of AI in accordance with the Gartner maturity cycle, at the moment, may be associated with inflated expectations of the effect of its application. Therefore, it is important to identify the processes of intelligent operating rooms where the introduction of AI can give the greatest benefit.

Target. To investigate the possibility of using AI in the course of creating intelligent operating systems.

Results. It is shown that the use of AI is relevant in preoperative preparation (support for medical decision-making, formation of operation schedules, organization of the workplace in the operating room). In the operating unit AI can be used to control the operation of the lighting system of the operating field, to optimize the operation processes, including disinfection measures. The use of AI to ensure a fully autonomous operation process using robotic systems is not possible today, but the gradual development of technologies can allow moving in this direction, but also requires the resolution of both ethical and legal issues. The introduction of AI into the process of rehabilitation of patients in the postoperative period can be of great benefit for a medical institution due to the wide possibilities of regular monitoring of the state of health. A possible roadmap for the introduction of elements of intelligent operating rooms into clinical practice is presented.

Practical significance. At the moment, experts are discussing how to find the right balance between the use of digital technologies and the usual work of surgeons and medical personnel in medical institutions. According to experts, the use of AI in operating rooms is justified in many cases, but it is necessary to take into account the existing limits of the applicability of modern digital technologies. That is why it is important to identify promising areas when creating intelligent operating rooms, where the use of AI will be appropriate.
