Abstract:
Russian nobleman, a government official Semen Korsakov (1787 - 1853) is a pioneer in artificial intelligence, the inventor of the "intellectual machines" to enhance the power of human mind. Korsakov was reputedly the first to use the punched cards for information storage and processing. In 1832, he presented a series of mechanical devices for searching and classification. Punched card plays the role of knowledge bases, and the machines can be considered as forerunners of modern expert systems. In this paper we consider the set-theoretic formalization of Korsakov's machines. In the first half of the 19th century Korsakov has realized in practice the basic operations with sets, which are the basis of discrete mathematics.
