Proprioceptive diagnostics of temperament and character as a tool for psychophysiological and neuropsychological observation

Abstract:
Myokinetical Psychodiagnosis of Mira y López [9, 10] was used by physiologists to check the hand asymmetry as an adaptation to a new time zone [4] or functional motor asymmetries in some psychic diseases [3], tolerance to stress in indigenous and migrant population [1] or psychophysiological markers of personal tolerance in adolescent period [2] among other hundreds of studies carried out by Mira y López and his followers [7]. In the Laboratory of Mira y López of the University of Barcelona the Proprioceptive Diagnostics of Temperament and Character was created with use of new technologies. Short history of the Proprioceptive Diagnostics of Temperament and Character (DP-TC) Up to this moment, the evolution of the Mira y Lopez Laboratory (University of Barcelona) can be divided into three main periods from the time when revision and digitization had been started by Prof Josep Maria TousRal in 2000: 1st stage: Introduction of the scanning of graphical results performed by participants with use of the pen-pencil method of Mira y Lopez [11], as an introduction of MyokineticPsychodiagnosis, Revised and Scanned (PMK-RE, abbreviated from Spanish name «PsicodiagnósticoMiokinéticoRevisado y Escaneado»). 2nd stage: The advanced version, the PMK-RD test (or MyokineticPsychodiagnosis, Revised and Digitalized) comprised the use of special digitalized tablet on which the kinematic tracings were performed. 3d stage: Appearance of DP-TC [2, 13, 16], with digital technique (with use of touch screen), which was applied for measuring proprioceptive kinematic hand movements. The term «proprioceptive» is used, since a fine motor behaviour in proprioceptive condition (without external feedback correction of graphical movements or seeing the active hand position) stands at the base of this method. Procedure The precision of fine motor performance (hand drawings over model lines) is measured in the following types of stimuli (models to follow) in DP-TC test (with and without vision of one-s body): a) Lines of 40 mm length (or lineograms) for all movement types and both hands, and b) Parallels, lines to be drawn inside of the models, represented in from of ∏ or inverted ∏. Observable variables (six bipolar dimensions of DP-TC): 1) Mood (pessimism  optimism); 2) Decision-Making (submission  dominance); 3) Attention Style: Intra-tension and extra-Tension (inward  outward); 4) Emotivism (cold/distant  warm/affiliated); 5) Irritability (behavioural inhibition  behavioural excitability); 6) Variability/Impulsivity (rigidness  variability in behaviour). Test description: duration of 1530 minutes, individual application; touch screen plus stylus and PC are needed with the software use license or individual uses that can be treated on-line. Practical applications: Psychological and clinical help [8], revision in the applicants for gun license permission [15, 16]; assessment of applicants for jobs related with human life security and responsibility (pilots, drivers of school buses, etc.), revision for drive license application.
