The formation of the pattern radar images of ships using a limited set of experimental data

Abstract:
The work is based on using the local character of radio wave reflection from ships which is characterized by the availability of the reflection sources from several strongly reflecting constructions or devices against a background of a weakly reflecting part. Such local reflection sources, in dependence of SAR resolution capability, can give separate marks, similar to SAR impulse response, or the result of their interference in SAR resolution element. The given property, after making corresponding transformations, allows to form radar images of waterborne ships taking into consideration the SAR characteristics (resolution) and distortions caused by sea disturbance. The results of formation of radar images of ships are given for SARs with a different resolution. As an original material, the real radar image of moorages of ships in a L-waveband with resolution about 1.5 m was used. The radar images were compared with their classes by means of estimating and visual analysis of available optical shots which correspond to the radar ones. The recommendations to continue further works are given.
