The first part of this article gives an overview of the current state of the problem of master data management systems development and implementation. The fact that despite the growing demand for master data management systems there is no common approach to their development is pointed out. Also some specific qualities of master data are mentioned, that are not being fully taken into account by contemporary commercial master data management systems. A brief description of an original approach to master data management systems design is provided. The approach is based on a proposed data model, specifically designed to incorporate complex data structures, common to master data. Being based of the relational data model the proposed data model allows for relatively simple implementation on a conventional relational database server. In accordance with the proposed model a method for mathematical analysis of distributed master data management systems is proposed. The method provides the capability to detect potential issues caused by interaction between master data and current data on the design stage, before any significant resources are invested into the system.
