An algorithm for trajectory control of an aircraft, providing on-board radar resolution of flying objects in a dense group

Abstract:
The challenge of increasing accuracy of individual guidance on a target in a dense group is one of the most vital problems of - air-to-air - precision weapons. One side of this challenge is to increase the resolution of airborne radars to the point of resolving targets in a dense group. A very promising way of increasing angular resolution of airborne radar is to use so-called radar carrier trajectory surveillance control also known as Doppler beam sharpening. The simplest method of implementing Doppler beam sharpening is to control angular velocity of target-s sight line coupled with local optimization based on stochastic theory of optimal control. Synthesis of the algorithms was carried out assuming that gap between targets in the group is known thus defining required resolution; the targets are moving in an arbitrary direction with constant velocity; range of possible g-load and acceptable error are down; the carrier has sufficiently precise distance and closing speed meters; trajectory control is limited to horizontal plane only. An example of using the proposed algorithm is shown.
