Abstract:
«Volga» is an early warning radar designed to identify launches of ballistic missiles and track artificial satellites. The radar is considered as an advanced radar of early 1980-th, but has some operational problems. Rapid development of microelectronics and fiber-optic communication lines over the last 20 years has given the opportunity to meet an urgent need to increase the performance and quality of service. The purpose of «Volga» radar modernization is improving its performance while maintaining the achieved characteristics. Attention is paid to improving reliability, reducing the number of staff, reducing energy consumption and heat dissipation, ensuring availability of items required for replenishment. Work had to be carried out without stopping the radar. Effect of modernization is achieved through the use of microchips with ultrahigh degree of integration. It also allowed implementing non-standard junction in-terfaces with the existing equipment in the shortest possible time with minimum resources. These components are placed in modules. It was necessary to develop 4 types of such modules: beam forming module, digital filtering module, common sync and filter field display module and coupling module. Fiber-optic communication lines have been selected for data transfer. The upgrade achieved following results: reduction of equipment from 134 to 2 racks 24 coupling modules, reducing the energy con-sumption by 2 orders of magnitude, the increase in reliability up to 50 times, preserving the performance characteristics. The reduction in equipment made it possible to radically reduce power consumption and load on the cooling system. The increase in the estimated probability of failure-free operation and reduction in the range of component parts has created preconditions for reducing the number of staff. In addition several performance characteristics were improved due to maximum utilization FPGAs digital signal processing capabilities. An effective method of service specifications improvement has been developed during «Volga» radar receiver station modernization. The method is applicable to early warning, ABM and space control radars. It is possible to give reasonable predictions of modernization effects for other radars. Some radars, which can be attributed to the generation of the 1980-s in terms of technical solutions, are in need of modernization in order to extend its lifetime.
