Abstract:
The content of magnesium in various organs and tissues of rats with alimentary hypomagnesemia was studied experimentally. The experiments were performed on adult nonlinear white female rats. The hypomagnesemia in the experimental animals was induced by feeding them with a balanced Mg-deficient diet for 2 months with free access to distilled water. The extent of hypomagnesemia was estimated by content of magnesium in blood plasma and erythrocytes spectrophotometrically using color reaction with titan yellow. On the 70th day the animals were taken out of the experiment by decapitation and the sampling of organs and tissues for further studies was carried out (heart, aorta, femoral muscles, forebrain, cerebellum, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, ovaries, uterus, liver, kidney, spleen). The magnesium content in the samples was determined by ICP-MS. It was found that rats on Mg-deficient diet to the 70th day had a statistically significant decrease of magnesium levels in erythrocytes and plasma as compared to the intact group. At the same time, a significant decrease in the magnesium content was found in only three organs: aorta, uterus and thyroid gland. In the myocardium, skeletal muscles, forebrain, cerebellum, pituitary gland, thyroid gland, ovaries, liver parenchyma, kidneys and spleen, no statistically significant differences from the control group were found. Probably, during the experiment in the organism of Mg-deficient animals the efficiently redistribution of magnesium from its main depot in the bone tissue to other organs was occurred, which helped to preserve the physiological level of magnesium in most organs. These results suggest that at the alimentary deficiency of Mg first of all can affect the cardiovascular, endocrine and reproductive systems.
