Angionorm use in post-infarction cardiosclerosis

Abstract:
We studied the possibility to expand the range of combined pharmacotherapy of post-infarction cardiosclerosis (PIC) in clinical settings using phyto-product Angionorm compared to standard therapy involving acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). Angionorm is a tabletted phyto-product based on extracts of hawthorn fruits, licorice roots, horse-chestnut seeds and dog-rose fruits. The clinical study involved 40 patients (24 male, 16 female, age 64.0 + 4.4 years) with PIC of various severity. Study group (n = 30) received Angionorm 1 tablet t.i.d. 40 minutes after meal for 60 days as component of basal therapy. Control group (n = 10) received ASA (75-125 mg/day) for 60 days as an anti-thrombotic agent. Major clinical symptoms and blood coagulation parameters were measured before and after treatment. Angionorm administration to PIC patients, which had basal hypercoagulation status and increased risk of thrombosis, resulted in normalization of blood coagulation parameters. Angionorm efficacy was comparable to ASA effect by the majority of parameters. Both patient groups showed positive dynamics of general clinical symptoms of the disease. Angionorm was well tolerated by PIC patients, including absence of gastric damage. At the same time, 2 (20 %) of ASA-treated patients noted pain in left epigastrium and dyspepsia. The established clinical efficacy and absence of side effects indicate the expediency of Angionorm use as anti-thrombotic component of combined PIC therapy. Its administration is preferable for long-tern control of blood coagulation in PIC patients, when administration of acetylsalicylic acid products can result in complications or treatment failure.
