Abstract:
Iron is one of most important essential trace elements with long history of use in nutrition and medicine. The main biological function of iron is due to it's role as key factor of proteins, transporting oxygen, participating in cellular metabolism, mitochondrial functions, DNA synthesis and is essential for cellular growth and differentiation. Deviations in iron metabolism are widespread in Russia and cause lot of diseases, among them anemia is most famous. In review the modern data concerning iron cellular transport and cinetics in the human body are presented. The special attention on genetic aspects of iron metabolism derangements is focused. Separate chapters dedicated to iron's role as enzymes cofactor, clinical manifestation of iron deficiency and overloading. Laboratory criteria of iron status assesssment also are prersented. in conclusion authors pay the special attention to evolution ofnutritional and medical significance of iron metabolism in developed and emergency countries.
