Abstract:
Lithospermum erythrorhizon, representative of the family Boraginaceae, is a rare and unique plant listed in the Red Book and contains a large number of pharmacologically valuable compounds. Its industrial harvesting is impossible, so development of medicines with active ingredients from Lithospermum erythrorhizon is possible only by biotechnology: that is using a cell culture of Lithospermum grown on synthetic media. Today two complexes of compounds isolated from Lithospermum are interesting for science and practical medicine: naphthoquinone complex with shikonin and its esters, and polyphenolic complex with derivatives of rosmarinic acid. Shikonin and its derivatives have antioxidant, antiphlogistic, antithrombotic, antimicrobic and wound-healing effects. Polyphenolic compounds have antiphlogistic, hepatoprotective, cholesterol-lowering activity, they are potent antioxidants. The cause of some periodontal diseases are pathogenic bacteria that cause an inflammation. An application of polymeric dental films with naphthoquinone Lithospermum complex for the treatment of these problems is very perspective, based on its pharmacological activity. As a result of this work both complexes of biologically active substances were isolated sequentially from Lithospermum cell culture. The flow chart for obtaining polymeric films with naphthoquinone complex was developed with three different polymeric bases: methylcellulose, sodium-carboxymethylcellulose and combined base. Also some of the technological parameters of films were defined, such as tear strength, degree of adhesion, swelling coefficient, linear elongation. The results were compared and the best composition of the polymeric dental films was selected: it was a combination of methylcellulose and sodium-carboxymethylcellulose.
