Content of tannins in the almond willow (Salix triandra L.) branches indigenous to the North Caucasus

Abstract:
The object of study - the almond willow branches (S. triandra L.), which grows in the North Caucasus, collected in different phases of the growing season. Purpose of work - qualitative and quantitative determination of tanning substances (TS). Identification was performed by qualitative reactions [4] and by HPLC. There were found both TS of a hydrolyzable nature and of condensed nature, but willow branches mainly contains components of condensed TS (catechin, epicatechin, epigallocatechingallate). Only about 20 % of the amount of tanning substances are representing by tannin. The greatest number of TS contained in the branches without leaves. Almost comparable amounts TS contain leaves and branches with leaves - 18.95 and 21.68 %, respectively. Quantitative determination of the TS was performed by titration method described in State Pharmacopoeia XI ed. [1]. Content of tanning substances counted both tannin and condensed TS [3]. The dynamics of accumulation of biologically active substances has been studied, depending on the time and place of collection. It was established that the annual branches without leaves contain, especially in the spring, fewer TS compared with leaves and two-year branches. By the fall of TS content also falls. The content of TS (oxidizable substances) also depends on the year of collection of raw materials. The content of TS in terms of condensed (regardless of place and time of harvest) was in the branches without leaves from 4.7 to 8.5 % in the branches and leaves - from 3.9 to 7.6 % in the leaves - from 5,1 to 7.6 %. This fact can indicate the prospect of workpiece medicinal plants as a source of tanning TS (oxidizable substances). Besides permanganometric method it was used selective spectrophotometric method based on deposition reaction using TS collagen solution for a more objectively rated TS content [2]. The content of TS found by spectrophotometric method differs significantly from the results obtained by titration, as in State Pharmacopoeia XI ed. entitled «tanning substances» determines the amount of polyphenolic compounds extracted with water and titrated with potassium permanganate 0.02 M in the presence of indigo sulfate and spectrophotometric method allows determine the contents directly TS.
